Meet Charla

As a passionate advocate for social justice and equity, I have dedicated my career to creating inclusive spaces and empowering marginalized communities. Rooted in Critical Race Theory, I recognize the systemic nature of oppression and strive to challenge it through my work.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working in various roles that have deepened my understanding of community needs and effective strategies for social change. From program development with Girl Scouts of Central Indiana to serving as a school social worker at Avondale Meadows Academy and directing Project Home Indy, I have honed my skills in building strong teams and coalitions to address pressing social issues.

Additionally, I am proud of my contributions to advancing anti-racist education in social work. As a co-founder of the Social Work Coalition for Anti-Racist Educators (SWCAREs), I have spearheaded initiatives to challenge colonial ideologies within social work education, resulting in the integration of anti-racist competencies into the CSWE educational standards. Together with colleagues, I have facilitated Racial Justice and Liberatory Practice Continuing Education Series at universities nationwide, igniting conversations and actions toward collective liberation.

A pivotal moment in my career came with the founding of Connected in Community, a group therapy practice committed to providing anti-oppressive therapy services. Driven by the belief that mental health care should be inclusive and affirming for all individuals, Connected in Community serves as an affirming, healing space for the Indianapolis community.

In addition to leading Connected in Community, I also founded Our Therapy Lab, a subsidiary organization aimed at supporting the development and training of students seeking to enhance their skills in anti-oppressive clinical practice. Through Our Therapy Lab, we provide comprehensive training and mentorship to graduate students and therapists in residence, equipping them with the tools and knowledge needed to become culturally competent and socially conscious clinicians.

I am immensely proud of the work we do at Connected in Community and Our Therapy Lab, as we continue to push boundaries, challenge norms, and strive for a more inclusive and equitable future. Together, we celebrate diversity, nurture empowerment, and recognize healing as a collective achievement.

Beyond my professional endeavors, I find joy in spending time with my family – my husband, two little humans, two dogs, and a cat. Whether exploring new adventures or enjoying quiet moments at home, I cherish the simple pleasures of life and remain committed to making a positive impact in the world.
