Too often, clinical mental healthcare is taught and practiced as if it exists outside of the social and political realities shaping our lives. But our mental health is deeply influenced by the world around us—experiences of racism, sexism, classism, and other forms of systemic oppression don’t just shape how people live, they shape how people feel, cope, and survive.
This presentation introduces the foundational principles of anti-oppressive practice and explains why it is essential for ethical, effective clinical care. Together, we will explore case studies and real-world scenarios to identify practical ways clinicians can adopt an anti-oppressive lens. Participants will leave with concrete strategies to affirm clients’ lived experiences, challenge harmful assumptions, and create therapeutic spaces that foster healing and liberation.
